A ten-year writer for the Baltimore Gay Paper, and former board member of the Pride Festival of Central Pennsylvania, Marakay Rogers is now an attorney in York, Pennsylvania practicing family, juvenile, and criminal law. Before she knew better about such things, she was the Executive Director of the York City Human Relations Commission, enforcing a set of civil rights laws that did not include sexual orientation at that time (and didn't for some years after she left, either).
In law school, Marakay was a legal intern with Gay Rights National Lobby, now Human Rights Campaign. Part of her hands-on training in defending the rights of the LGBTQ community came from the experience of studying at Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, at that time a haven of conservative Republican legal thought and law students, while being one of the few out LGBT students.
Marakay is the York County delegate to the state board of the Libertarian Party of Pennsylvania, where she serves on its Legal Committee, and is a two-time survivor of campaigns for Attorney General of Pennsylvania, in 2004 and 2008. In her copious spare time in 2006, she maintained a lawsuit against the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for unequal treatment for third parties in the state's elections code. |
