The Only "Wasted" Vote is one that goes Unused!

By: Allan Wallace, OL Chair 1998 - 2002

I hear a lot of objections to voting, and in particular to voting Libertarian. Even though there are numerous examples of small numbers of people making big differences in almost every election, I still hear, "One vote can't make a difference." And even though the Libertarian Party continues to run more candidates in better funded campaigns each election cycle, I still hear, "I like your candidates but I don't want to waste my vote."

Before I became a Libertarian, I sometimes allowed people to sucker me into thinking my vote doesn't count. And when I voted, I allowed others to convince me to vote for people I disliked in order to keep people I hate out of office. After watching Democrats make promises to our community that almost always became lies; after watching Republicans denigrate us and work against our best interests, I came to some conclusions: The lesser of two evils is STILL EVIL! And then it was clear to me that the only real way to waste your vote is not to use it.

It doesn't matter which major party candidate you vote for if both are evil. After so many years of voting for evil candidates, I decided to vote only for good, principled candidates. There is only one party that shares our highest and best values. There is only one party that openly and fully welcomes Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered individuals into membership and full participation -- The Libertarian Party.

Once I fell prey to the media's and politicians' propaganda about wasting my vote. But I realized that voting for the lesser of evils meant still voting for someone I didn't really want to have in office. When I did, I felt dirty, like I had done something for which to be ashamed.

When I started voting my conscience, voting for people who shared my principles and values, I suddenly started feeling good about voting.

Remember you have a choice. You can vote for the Republicrats and Demopublicans (politics-as-usual), candidates in single cause parties or single personality parties, or you can vote for the candidates of the Party of Principle--The Libertarian Party.
